The opinionated ramblings and muses of a weary web victim.

Well...I guess it takes/took 10 days or so of over 30c weather... but after x years of almost permanent running my V8 Coolermaster fan decided to bugger off and go troppo.

It's not like it was ever an issue.....until a shutdown/reboot ...cos I never shutdown.....

But then silly old me did.

So the fan said time for a holiday and shut up shop.

I got it kick-started one time with some compressed air and a poking or three....

...but today it said 'no way, Jose,  find some other poor sucker..'  [or in this case....blower].

Fortunatement I'd had a wee chat with yrag and he'd suggested a spiffy thing made by Noctua....yes, wait for it.....

...a FAN.

So I had just received a pair of 'em just this same day....fortuitous or what?

Now....my system was still failing to boot....BIOS having a hissy-fit that the CPU fan was having 'issues' namely it was AWOL.

So....not to be outdone I unplugged the fan from the V8 and plugged in the new trendy NF-F12 and figured...hey, no sweat...I'll just plonk it on top of the V8....it can do its blowing from there.....

And the system is a happy chappy....as I type this....fan hanging half out of the case....temps on average DOWN 6c.

Who needs to fit the thing actually INTO-THE-COOLER?

System won't know itself when I put both of them in.....PROPERLY....

OK I get it. I messed up. Said things I should not have said. Offended people. Stepped on some toes.

For that, I am sorry. Forgive me, I will try harder to keep things best left unsaid to myself.

However people do in fact change, and I am trying hard to do so.

It was in reply to 2of3 who suggested the laptop specs he posted were that good they'd hold their own with any Desktop.

They do not.

What I actually said was:

That's better than most people's desktop PC

Which is true.

remove the mobo, paul? if i remember correctly, you need to remove the 4 screws holding the shroud on at the top and 2 lower screws. after that, the fan and shroud should come straight out. i know i replaced the fan in my V8 without removing the assembly from the motherboard.

remove the mobo, paul?

Nope...didn't have to....the issue was when I built it I had to cut a hole in the mobo tray to access the mounting...as I couldn't mount it first and slide the whole tray in....the V8 was too big.

I now have 2 fans off the cpu header...one in the V8 and the other is the chassis rear exhaust....both the new fans.

The front is a 140 ...that'll be the next to change.

While I was at it I put in new Vantec EZ swap 4's as the older caddies had tired fans too.

The whole thing is eerily quiet ...and I haven't even got the side back on yet...

Any pictures of that machine Jafo?

on Feb 18, 2013

As a hobbiest who specializes in building SPEED machines , I really enjoy reading all the specs from everyone's rigs...it's kinda like a Hustler magazine for me !!! LOL !!                   -- Ace --

@ Jafo - VERY impressive machine my friend !!

Here it is...after rebuild....note the desk fan used to help with cooling when the CPU fan went south.

on Feb 18, 2013

The mess prior ...note the new CPU fan plonked on top of the V8 ...it worked...and was better like that than the existing.

The big 'lump' under the V8 is the GTX590 ....only just fitted the box...another 10mm and it wouldn't have...

One day I'll finish the home-grown desk...even paint it....

Well, since we're showing.......

You still have it setup to hot swap hard drives?

on Feb 18, 2013

If you're talking to me, I have a hot swap drive bay.

If not, then, I'll STFU.

Yes...

Looking at the coolermaster fan I removed...it's positively cactus ....not only doesn't it 'spin' you have to apply concerted effort just to move it...probably a couple of pounds.  Even the ordinary old case fan would be better...it still spins...

Very , Very nice guys !! Hope you don't mind me saving these pictures, I want to add them to the collection of rig pics that I have on my "Bad Ass" machine wall display. Those are awsome !!  I'm working on a huge machine project right now , but it's so dang expensive, it's going to take me forever to complete. I've been in my shop lately fabricating some new design ideas I have for ultimate CPU cooling. I don't know if you guys ever saw this video , (don't remember who sponsered it) ,but the 2 guys in the video won the world record for fastest desktop machine. A record breaking 44 Gig overclock using an intel chip with a liquid nitrogen radiator cooling the CPU !! It was freeking AWSOME !!    -- Ace --

Have a link to that video?

To the OP, why not just get a new fan?  Its not that hard, if you know the socket type you should be able to get one for 30 to 60 for air cooled.  You take the old one out, clean off the thermal paste off the CPU, put new thermal paste on the new cooler if it doesn't have it, then screw/lock everything down and your set.  Hardware is easy.
