With monotonous predictability, when talking about space scene depictions in Digital Art I'll often refer people to Greg Martin's works, not the only great example of skilled imagination but definitely up there with the best.
Again, today on IRC, after disparaging Bebi's effort [be fair...I didn't know it was hers...and when it comes to critique I don't actually play favourites, anyway]...I popped over to ...

...and eventually ended up at......
For me it all started before Windows....in Dos ....and a proggy called Xtree, XTPro and finally XTGold.
Great stuff...but as computers got bigger it hit the 640k limit and went belly-up in 32 bit Win Vers.
Then there was ZTreeWin ....a one-man development that had 'no limits'...still a 'text' file manager...but if you were used to Xtree....you were at home with this one.
Alternate shell users [particularly Litestep] never wanted to inadvertently invoke the dreaded Exploder shell while u...
My old scanner died...so I got myself a new one....CanoScan LiDE 600F
Fun thing is the CD doesn't autorun to show the setup/install menus....
Not on this box...or on my Lappy....but it does on my wife's machine.
There's no autorun.inf ....and the files there are all appear to be for a Mac.....and not apparently executable.
I dl'd the driver and toolbox...but I still need the OCR and editing stuff ...but can't get the disc to 'do anything'....short of throwing it frisby-style....

'Twas Wednesday [yesterday] about midday.....there was a flicker onscreen...
'Damn', I thought....'not more animated Gifs'......
The flicker was the screen image edges...far left and right.....the extremes of the horizontal scan. In other words the image was narrowing 4 or 5 pixels each side...and recovering.
Just now and then.
My next thought was.....'probably time for a new monitor'
It was a CRT... Hyundai, aka DiamondView ....19" true flat screen.....ran like a dream at m...

This is a desktop.....

[Actually....the links at left are interesting]....
Was window-shopping the other day....maybe for a tiny mouse suitable for a Lappy....and wandered into 'Officeworks' to kill some time.
I found a MS 5000 wireless Explorer 2.0 mouse instead....price on it was $27.95 AUS...so I told the Sales person that had to be a mistake..... he scanned it and said 'no, it's listed as a run-out item'...so I ran out with it [as it were].
RRP price in Oz was/is $79.95 .....
Ya gotta love a bargain...
Over the last few weeks my main 'backup' drive [a 160gig PATA] started to show signs of ageing ....the odd noise...the odd error about being 'unable to erite' [though it had]...so I thought it wise to get a replacement.
Yesterday I installed a 320gig WD SATA [16meg cache] to swap everything from the potentially ailing drive...and left a proggy called 'Syncback' to handle it overnight...[about 130gig in 330,000+ files].
This morning I checked the log and there were 12 files that failed to b...
I have one of these....but need an 'easy' way to get hold of some OS disks for it....just the OS disks themselves, not all those null-modem data transfer/whatever solutions that need a soldering iron....just the disks....
Will pay handsomely....[afterall the whole computer was only AUD $5....with extra drive, printer and mouse].
I just want to be able to say:- "Yes, of course I have an Apple....what do you take me for....backward - primitive?"...
Things Are Going to Get a Lot Worse
Before Things Get Worse"I liken starting one's computing career with Unix, say as an undergraduate, to being born in East Africa. It is intolerably hot, your body is covered with lice and flies, you are malnourished and you suffer from numerous curable diseases. But, as far as young East Africans can tell, this is simply the natural condition and they live within it. By the time they find out differently, it is too late. They already think that the writing of...
Probably teaches me to help someone out with their comp issues.....his USB ports weren't working.....and now neither is my 1gig Flashdrive.
What's the bet something was wired up cleverly and it's now been fried.
Bugger. $120 AUS down the drain.
Next time he can use his own....

Last night....I had to reboot....[it happens]...
When I did my keyboard failed to be 'seen' in windows....aka...I couldn't type in my logon pass. [there was no 'flash' of KB lights, though the numlock light was on].
If I then tried the caps lock or similar...it'd cycle once or twice then fail to respond....[mouse worked, though].
KB was fine in boot/bios...only stopping in 'Doze.
It gets stranger....
Tried another KB...also PS2...also no luck.
I have two HDs...same OS...b...

All you lonely souls....need a friend?
Buy one with a WC Sub....they'll lurve you for it...
Some programs can be a pain in the butt to use/retain....others also a pain to remove...and yet others are a pain once they're gone.
Norton doesn't screw around....they make one suit all.
Once I couldn't convince NAV2004 to actually SCAN ANYTHING [timely just days after updating its subscription], I decided it was time to move on....you know, actually get a proggy that worked.
I uninstalled Norton...using it's special removal tool and all...made a neat job of it....
or...
So I tho...
Today IE6 decided to shutdown ZA's TrueVector service.Pretty neat, really....get on the net and your firewall karks it.SDC is fine [IRC] ....Firefox is fine....Outlook is fine.....supposedly it was an issue with the MS Antispyware proggy....but shutting that down didn't help....IE6 was the culprit....
