The opinionated ramblings and muses of a weary web victim.

I took a hole pile of 'junk' to a 'thrift shop' called Savers today....bit of a New Year's clean-up.....which entitled me to a 20% discount on anything I bought there....

I found a little desktop PC that said 'for parts only'...for $8 ....and looked inside [it's a pop-top] and said 'what the heck....can't lose...even if it's fried' [it wasn't].

So.....$6.40 later....got it home....plugged various junk in....and fired it up.

No OS .... it had been wiped [office machine].

Ah....but on the side it had a Win XP Pro label/key....

So....half an hour later.....

I now have a perfectly fine....Core 2 Duo 2.33 with 2 gig of ram...dvd/burner combo ....386meg onboard graphics... 160gig sata hd running XP Pro SP3.

Now, so I don't get divorced....the old P4 1.6 with 1 gig goes to God....

It's a website...listing CPUs

Thanks for the link, that's a little stash of information.

For your amusement -   Your P4 @ 361 slightly trumps my P4 @ 332.  All things being relative, an i3 @ 5143 looks pretty tasty and makes me think an i7 would be totally wasted on me

I recently went back to XP - besides not having the 'aero' look my pc works fine (XP was reasonably stable anyway) & I have all those old but brilliant skins from long ago. To me it is also much more user-friendly getting around explorer. Don't miss Win 7 at all.

Too bad you will have to go back to 7 in April or risk using an unprotected computed since MS is dropping support for XP. That's all that keeps me from using XP. That and I like the folder organization in 7 better.

The '5008' current rig is an early i7 920 2.67 Ghz ....and it's the main bottleneck when running FSX [Flight Sim].

I think when I 'upgrade' next it'll be something that scores around 20,000 ....

Hey Jafo I bet you would not mind having that AMD FX-9590 Eight-Core CPU. Scores at 10457.

on Jan 23, 2014

The i7 4960X is 7th on the list...and better bang for buck at 14185 than any higher rated...

Yeah but I never did have a strong love for Intel processors.

Wrong. MS has backtracked on that.

Microsoft has announced this that it will continue to provide anti-malware support for Windows XP until July 2015 - a little over one year after its end-of-life date on April 8.

XP loses product support, but not security support. There is a deadline for being able to install MSE on it though.

Nice pick-up, Paul..........to use another British phrase related to your use, in the first instance.........I would say your 'find' is "the dogs bollocks"

BTW, my cpu score for this old dog.......

AMD Sempron 3100+ 445 1486

5.75       My main rig, although badly out of date does a bit better

AMD Phenom 9850B Quad-Core 3229 469

Ya it's always good to feel like you get your money's worth on an upgrade. On the other hand, if you keep scratching up machines for $6... well it kind of takes the edge off

Now the conundrum....

The MoBo has a PCI-E slot ....and I have a 'spare' XFX GTX285 'black' Graphics card.... that'd get that WEI up to more like 5.9...

Except for 2 things....the power supply is one of those 'compact things' and no way big enough to push the GPU....

...and the darn card is about 2 miles too long for the case....so everything would need to be dumped into another box....

I 'could' chuck it all into Terry's Lian Li....and she'd end up with a processor that was 4 times better....and not relying on an AGP card....

Just need to pop in a few sata power adapters...and rethink a few other bits.

It'd give me the chance to clean everything thoroughly too....

That old machine would have been the better part of three grand .... and now it's to be upgraded thanks to a $6.40 purchase from a 'junk' shop....

My yard sale special started out as an eMachines T3104 until I yanked its guts and tossed it into a custom case with side window and blue led fans that I salvaged. The front of the case looks like a BMW Coupe. I think it dates back to '02-'05. With the big "e" boot logo disabled, you would never know  it from a "real" computer. The VIA chipset absolutely refused to play well with a modern OS, so it stays XP. The FX 5200 does OK, but if the mobo wasn't AGP, I'd toss my 8800GT GFX card in it as well. The old dog will probably outlive me.

Well...

Here I am on the $6.40 machine.....now running 7 Ultimate 64 on my old 60gig OCZ SSD.

WEI is 3.3 ....onboard vid being the issue....

5.8

5.5

3.9

3.3

5.9

Now to add a second HD for data....got a sata 250 7200 around here somewhere...

It's now happily residing in the Lian Li case.... with a suitable PSU to run the GTX 285...

WEI is now 5.5 ....

Scores are...

5.8

5.5

7.4

7.4

5.9

Best I'd be able to do is 5.8 ...if I up the ram.

Not worth it, really...

Nope.
