The opinionated ramblings and muses of a weary web victim.
A new regular update on what's happenin' on the frontline of Uploads/mods....and other 'stuff'.
Published on January 23, 2008 By Jafo In WinCustomize News

OK, so I started moderating 6.5 years ago ....about time we had a 'regular' update news/thingie on what we 'do' and what we're seeing in the queues....

One section I look at is screensavers.  [I personally never use them....my screen goes blank after ten minutes of disuse....[like my brain], so there's no 'point'].

What intrigues me is how one saver can be a simple 'scr' file of half a meg....and look good with it....whilst others are 36 meg installers [exes] and to use the cute English word - simply look a little naff.

My DSL isn't the world's fastest.....probably closer to the slowest...so downloading 36 meg to check out is a little 'War and Peace'....

But, we do it so we get the chance to be attacked by evil virii FIRST before releasing the executables to the wild...

I like Bootskins.

They download fast.

8 minutes to go on that s'saver d/l.... keep typing.

There's currently about 30 items in the various Queues.....[I just cleared another 20 or so].... relatively 'quiet'.... though that depends on who else has bumped some through before my checking.

There's still the odd upload that goes wrong....generally previews do not work ... but that's always been an issue at times.

The busiest section is still the wallpapers [always was] and it's probably still the most contentious.  I personally rarely find anything of interest, though am still bemused by those who imagine they won't be 'found out' when submitting a Digital Blasphemy wall....

**********************

Anyway....this is the first of a weekly 'update' on the intricacies of 'behind the scenes'....

[one day I aim to make it actually interesting, too....]....

Ah....saver d/l finished....now to 'get infected'....or not...

Nice insight to behind the scenes and your thoughts, a weekly post is a good idea.
Having a little idea of what goes on behind the scenes is always good.

Its true it does come off a bit on the negative side, but interesting none the less. There are many skins that never see the light of day for us everyday folk. Also I don't personally see the need for a screensaver as I like to save power if I'm not using the PC. I would hardly be looking it otherwise. People obviously use them though.
Keep this kind of stuff coming.

There are many skins that never see the light of day for us everyday folk.

Actually very few 'never see the light of day'.  Skins are only rejected when there is a technical problem, or a query about authorship [ripping], so probably 99% are released.

Following on from my initial post...I do remember one 'technical problem' with a skin upload....viral infection.  Was good we nipped it in the bud...

Then there was the time I wanted to download a new copy of 'Sonique' [skinnable media player - think Winamp 5 but many years earlier] and my AV kept flagging/deleting the archive as a virus [odd compression algorithm] ... so I disabled the AV and dl'd the proggy.  Later I rebooted, forgetting about the Sonique zip and my AV found it again and deleted it.

So I gave up ....
