I pensioned off the P4/3.0 and dragged my system into the 90's
Published on June 8, 2009 By Jafo In Personal Computing

The old box served well for over half a decade ..... but eventually life was passing me by.... particularly during the FULL boot time being around 10 minutes....

It was [in its day] a fairly decent machine...P4/3.0 in an ASUS P4P800e Deluxe mobo with 2 gig [4x500] ram and eventually about the 'fastest' AGP card still around....a HD3850 with 512 GDDR3...all in an old Lian Li P60, powered by a TruePower 550 Watt PSU.

Then I got hacked....ending up as a mule server for email spam [I think] ... along with my having a Win 7 RC to experiment with prompted me to 'do it' sooner, rather than later.

So, off I went to my fave Comp shop armed with a list...

...and a credit card.

Just a little time later.... I had a boot full of boxes and not much money left.

Thursday last it was....as I get it all home and eagerly started poking and prodding and lots of RTFM-ing.

Friday, and out came the drill and jigsaw to cut a hole into the MoBo tray of the Case ..... so the after-market cooler would fit.... bugger of a bloody big thing it was, too.

By Saturday arvo I was sitting at the dining table with fingers in my ears as I switched it on...no OS, etc....no Keyboard or Mouse .... just to see if lights would come on....and there'd be NO smoke......

They did...and there wasn't.

Sunday...was OS time...so in went Win7 RC1 [32 bit].

Took 4/5ths of eff-all time to install and there it was in all its quasi-Vista 'splendour'.

About the only way to describe it all  [other than black - as in the box] was/is "fucking fast".

I ain't got the MoBo drivers all in [Win7 compatibility]...and haven't rebooted yet since the Graphic Card driver install....

Can't even see it in real detail/scale as it's currently on a 17" CRT ....

...and I'm learning all about what won't always work as expected [like Sysmetrix]...but darn it's good...

The 'bits' I already have....to migrate across to the new machine ar the bits that plug in .... The DiNovo Edge KB ...the MS Explorer mouse ...the ASUS M221u LCD....scanners....printers....Logitech G15 wheel and pedals...etc.

What I got....

Lian Li PC-A6010 case [black]

Antec TruePower Quattro 1000w PSU

ASUS P6T-se  X58 i7 MoBo

Intel i7 920 2.66Ghz LGA1366 CPU

OCZ 6G-Triple [3x2G] PC12800 Gold Ram

CoolerMaster V8 CPU Cooler [that bloodey big thing]

Vantec EZ2 Sata hot-swap racks x2

1TB Seagate Sata2 7200 HD x2 [for backup/data]

250G Seagate Sata2 7200 HD x2 [for OS]

ACR-105 Multi card reader

LG Sata DVD-RW x2

XFX 1G GTX285 Black Edition [vid]

When Win7 is finally released I'll opt for the 64bit ver...and possibly double the ram....

Funniest thing is....I thought sysmetrix wasn't working....looking at CPU load and ram usage.....till I looked closer....

Good old hyper threading. Thanks. Good looking machine Jafo.

Watching the '8 cores' working and you wonder that Intel should provide you with a magnifying glass....so you can see the load in the graphs.....it's eff-all.

I could say something smart arse like: "Well you could always use the one you keep in the bathroom/toilet." ,but the fact is, they make all this new fangled stuff for the young pups with good eyesight, not us old codgers with failing eyesight and reflexes so slow we miss 'press delete to enter setup' during the extraordinarily fast boot-ups.

Technolergy, ain't it grand!!  Everything's getting faster and smaller... it's either a mere flash before our eyes cos it's so fast, or just a blur cos our specs ain't strong enough to see the detail.

That's odd. I seem to be heading in the opposite direction.

[unless I grab the 64 RC before]....and that won't be till it's out [October-ish]

Well, I guess I won't be selling the old 32bit laptop yet, I got one RC in the works and another three lined up.............anyway, congrats on the new toy!

That is exactly what I mean... as middle-aged spread encroaches and then goes rampant, we slow down as technology get faster and smaller.  Worse still, our eyesight is failing as a result of a mis-spent youth... so everything is getting harder to see to boot.  And speaking of 'boot' (now I've got this Phenom II quad core) my rig boots that fast I have to keep my finger spring loaded on the delete button... or I miss the "enter setup" part and Vista is asking me for my password.

How times change!  There was a time when 120mph on my Honda was a thrill... hehe, now the fastest thing I wanna be on is my computer chair.

Well...I bit the bullet and have swapped systems.....this new one is now my main machine.....the other will be cleaned, rebuilt and passed on to Terry ....anything's an improvement over that 1.6G desktop case.

Weirdest thing though.....now I'm using the MS wireless mouse and diNovo board.... scrolling the volume in Winamp only works one way.....up....

scrolling the volume in Winamp only works one way.....up....

Which when listening to Spinal Tap is the only way it should go... no point them going all the way to 11 if you don't.

BTW: for those who are interested/didn't know, Spinal Tap have a new album out... Back From the Dead.  Joost is doing a feature on Tap... and they're still as wacky as ever.

on Jun 21, 2009

I've never heard of Spiral Tap. Call me when Korn or Metallica get there new albums out this year.

on Jun 21, 2009

I've never heard of Spiral Tap.

WHAT??? You've NEVER heard of Spinal Tap?  See if your local video store has a copy of "This Is Spinal Tap" for rent... it is a comedic rockumentary featuring some of their music and worth the watch... there's also a music CD of the same name,, and a later release "Break Like the Wind" featuring Steve vai and other big name musos.  Also check out the link.

Call me when Korn or Metallica get there new albums out this year.

Dunno about Korn, but Metallica have an more recent album many wouldn't have heard about, "Beatallica"... it's Metallica doing Beatles songs using their own style and lyrics.

I'll pass thanks...

I'll pass thanks...

Like on what... Spinal Tap or Metallica doing the Beatles???

If it's Spinal Tap and you went to the link, that not the be all and end all of what they're about.  While some of their lyrics may be a bit tongue in cheek, the music is good and well worth a listen... as is the movie worth a watch.  Oh, and don't take any notice of the fact that these days they look like a bunch of aging rockers tripping out on magic mushies, it's 30 years on since the movie and original album... not that they can't still put a good tune together.

If it's the Metallica album, well yeah, some people migth think their doing the Beatles is sacrilege... but when were they ever reverent.  You either like 'em or you don't.

I'll pass on Spinal Tap.

on Jun 21, 2009

I havent's seen Spinal Tap in years but I do remember some of the funny bits were the parts where the guy couldn't get out of the egg and when the drummer spontaneously combusted.

I'll pass on Spinal Tap.

Oh well. they're one rock n' roll phenomen you won't get caught up in, then.

I havent's seen Spinal Tap in years but I do remember some of the funny bits were the parts where the guy couldn't get out of the egg and when the drummer spontaneously combusted.

Yeah, they've been quiet for a while, though they did the "Break Like the Wind" ablum in the early 90's... 92, I think.  Other than that, they've been mostly quiet since the 70's and 'This Is Spinal Tap'... until now, that is.

I have the movie on DVD and still watch it occasionally, for the comedy as well as the music... and yeah, I like those parts as well, plus when they performed "Sex Farm" at the USAF base.. when Derek Smalls got beeped at the airport metal detector for having a cucumber wrapped in tin foil down his pants.
