The opinionated ramblings and muses of a weary web victim.
I pensioned off the P4/3.0 and dragged my system into the 90's
Published on June 8, 2009 By Jafo In Personal Computing

The old box served well for over half a decade ..... but eventually life was passing me by.... particularly during the FULL boot time being around 10 minutes....

It was [in its day] a fairly decent machine...P4/3.0 in an ASUS P4P800e Deluxe mobo with 2 gig [4x500] ram and eventually about the 'fastest' AGP card still around....a HD3850 with 512 GDDR3...all in an old Lian Li P60, powered by a TruePower 550 Watt PSU.

Then I got hacked....ending up as a mule server for email spam [I think] ... along with my having a Win 7 RC to experiment with prompted me to 'do it' sooner, rather than later.

So, off I went to my fave Comp shop armed with a list...

...and a credit card.

Just a little time later.... I had a boot full of boxes and not much money left.

Thursday last it was....as I get it all home and eagerly started poking and prodding and lots of RTFM-ing.

Friday, and out came the drill and jigsaw to cut a hole into the MoBo tray of the Case ..... so the after-market cooler would fit.... bugger of a bloody big thing it was, too.

By Saturday arvo I was sitting at the dining table with fingers in my ears as I switched it on...no OS, etc....no Keyboard or Mouse .... just to see if lights would come on....and there'd be NO smoke......

They did...and there wasn't.

Sunday...was OS time...so in went Win7 RC1 [32 bit].

Took 4/5ths of eff-all time to install and there it was in all its quasi-Vista 'splendour'.

About the only way to describe it all  [other than black - as in the box] was/is "fucking fast".

I ain't got the MoBo drivers all in [Win7 compatibility]...and haven't rebooted yet since the Graphic Card driver install....

Can't even see it in real detail/scale as it's currently on a 17" CRT ....

...and I'm learning all about what won't always work as expected [like Sysmetrix]...but darn it's good...

The 'bits' I already have....to migrate across to the new machine ar the bits that plug in .... The DiNovo Edge KB ...the MS Explorer mouse ...the ASUS M221u LCD....scanners....printers....Logitech G15 wheel and pedals...etc.

What I got....

Lian Li PC-A6010 case [black]

Antec TruePower Quattro 1000w PSU

ASUS P6T-se  X58 i7 MoBo

Intel i7 920 2.66Ghz LGA1366 CPU

OCZ 6G-Triple [3x2G] PC12800 Gold Ram

CoolerMaster V8 CPU Cooler [that bloodey big thing]

Vantec EZ2 Sata hot-swap racks x2

1TB Seagate Sata2 7200 HD x2 [for backup/data]

250G Seagate Sata2 7200 HD x2 [for OS]

ACR-105 Multi card reader

LG Sata DVD-RW x2

XFX 1G GTX285 Black Edition [vid]

When Win7 is finally released I'll opt for the 64bit ver...and possibly double the ram....

Funniest thing is....I thought sysmetrix wasn't working....looking at CPU load and ram usage.....till I looked closer....

A month on and all's well.

Kaspersky's Beta dummy-spits....says it's 'stopped working' whilst it's doing a system scan [some form of false-positive cos it's clearly working...it's doing its scheduled scan.....ah, the joys of Betas].

Just about everything I can throw at it works OK [sometimes only 'ish'].  The File/folder tree is quaint...for want of a better word....duplicated and thus confusing references/locations for pictures, downloads, docs, etc.... I wonder if MS can spell 'KISS'.

Trying as hard as I can I've only managed 3 system lockups requiring a reset [and I could kill Win2000 at will, anytime I wanted...and that was supposed to be rock-solid yet I broke it typically twice a day].

If your most frustrating quirk is the mouse scrollwheel only working in one direction when interfacing with WA 2.9x  [volume only goes up, not down] then it's a pretty bloody good OS.

I dl'd the 64bit ver of Win 7 ...so next trick is to install that on a second drive and compare performances...and see if I find any driver dramas...

Familiarize yo'self with an XP pseudo-clone, cuz that's what UAC did (giving them the benefit of the doubt, here) to Vista.

Drivers, what's that -- outa synch at it happens?

M$ should give me back total control over CODECs, that's what.

Glad the new gear remains stable, so far.

Jafo - you leave it on 24/7?

Jafo - you leave it on 24/7?

Yes....it's required so I can keep up to speed with what's happening on the site and on IRC.

My previous machine outlived the lifespan of the case fans.  I replaced all 3 about 12 months ago.

It's one of the reasons I choose decent componentry....they get a hard life...and I want it to be a long one....

Wow. I can't keep mine on all the time in this heat. And the power bill would go up.

Kona...'Black Saturday' earlier this year saw us with 46.2c as an air temp.... though typically that's 10c higher than what we usually have in Summer.

on Jul 19, 2009

Only 115.16 degrees F? Arizona sees 120 F every summer here. Of course here where I am in Oregon we hardly see 100 F at all.

How is winter down there?

That wasn't a desert temperature...that was the temperature in Australia's second most populous city....on the Southern end of the mainland....

Highest recorded temp in Oz was/is...

  • Oodnadatta, South Australia  50.7 C  (123.3 F) on the 2nd January, 1960
on Jul 19, 2009

Melbourne weather is comparatively mild.... and if you don't like it you only need to wait 5 minutes...

Winter max's are typically 12 or so [c] and minimums around 5 or 6 at night...

on Jul 19, 2009

Highest recorded temp here in the US was:

USA's highest temperature, 134° F on July 10, 1913 in Death Valley, CA

on Jul 20, 2009

Winter max's are typically 12 or so [c] and minimums around 5 or 6 at night...

Ipswich Winter temps range from the mid 20's down to 0c and lower... 3 nights ago it was -2c here, but 26c during the day.  Such huge fluctuations play havoc on my poor arthritic bones... Melb fluctuations would be easier to get used to.

And before you suggest moving... that would mean 'aerial bloody ping-pong and bloody Victorians for neighbours.

Yebbut...I'm Tasmanian...and I hate aerial pingpong....

on Jul 20, 2009

You all send Winter back here as soon as you can OK? Thanks. Hot weather makes me sick.
