My 'mean' machine chucked a wobbly on Saturday....

Dunno what happened, but those wonderful BSODs referenced 'asmtxhci.sys' which is an ASUS USB3 driver.

I have a vague feeling it might have been caused by plugging in a mem card reader earlier that day.

Being a 'devoted' user of True Image 15, I had incremental backups of the OS and a last full one that dated to Wednesday ... which is ultimately what I restored to.

Being clever, I also have in place everyday backups of 'current stuff' that may be on the OS drive...so even those can be more recent.

Most of the 'simple' options aren't open to me as the OS is on an M.2x4 card that Win 7 has no understanding of and thus cannot find it to 'repair'.

In between I also have a 'normal' SSD install of Win 7 which I can switch to in the BIOS though that dates further back to the beginnings of this machine. If I can remain 'confident' my rescued system is solid I can perhaps also restore it to the SSD and have something more current.

About the only issues I still see are the Explorer mouse is sluggish [the Level 10 one is fine - I use both]...and the comp says it cannot communicate with the UPS ...which suggests that may be on its last legs.

More to investigate, I guess...

The issue drove me to drink [yes, I know...any excuse], but it's resolved.

I lost 600+ photos I'd just transferred to the machine - from the trip to the US ....but found them again in an image I wasn't expecting to have them ...lost track of time.

Apart from 2 days chasing the issue, the only thing lost into the ether was one day's emails ... none of which was a loss.

The M.2x4 drive is comparatively an unknown quantity with endurance/integrity as an OS drive so I have redundancies in place keeping everything backed regularly [and 2 'normal' SSDs that I can image back to and keep things running]...

Next task, now that this one's all good again is to 'upgrade' Terry's machine to 10 from 7. It'll be a real test of what can go wrong as it was my prime machine prior to this build and has about 7 years of system running/installs.

If it all goes without too many 'dramas' it means my current one can likely succeed too...though not in any hurry for that...

Jafo, as long as that machine does NOT have ANY traces of mcaffee OR norton products on the system (especcially device drivers for their 'antivirus' programs), it should be somewat ok.

the reason I mention those programs is I had some customers that had attempted to accept the 'upgrade' to winxin the first month or so, and the computers all failed to upgrade and could not even get to desktop, I ended up reverting back to the previous OS, and then digging around in them to find out why, the cause was those programs device drivers not being removed when those programs were uninstalled after purchase of the computer(the programs were among the crapware 'supplied' by manufacturer of computer on a new from retailer machine(those computers were NOT bought from a computer shop, but the electrical retailer type so loaded plimsole down with crapware)).

My 2 laptops were the only store-bought machines to have crap-ware [Norton] installed. Both were reformatted long ago....and both took 10 without any real issue.

All my desktops since one in the 90's ...a P1 are home-built so are more than safe in tat regard..
