The opinionated ramblings and muses of a weary web victim.

For 32 years I have lived in the same house in Melbourne, Australia and 5 years more before then - nearby....and all up - about 60 years over 3 places.

In that time the population of Melbourne has more than doubled [almost tripled] and in a few years will pass Sydney to be Australia's largest city.

Instead we moved to Ballaarat [also in Victoria]...and only the 3rd largest city in Victoria, population 101 thousand.

And that got me to thinking....

The USA has 300 million people..... and Australia has 25....but is roughly the same size.

Would you believe...if Melbourne was in America it would be the USA's second largest city by population...only beaten by New York, and yet in area it dwarfs NY - which is only 80% of the land area.

I'd always been bemused that all those famous places like Boston and San Fran were less than a quarter the pop of Melbourne and only about a 1/10 the area...but that sure makes them more desirable as somewhere to live.

Melbourne has pretty much reached critical mass yet for some reason keeps on getting the 'World's Most Livable City' award whilst still being the epitome of 'urban sprawl'...

I live on the West coast. From Ventura you can drive south along the coast for 260 miles and never once leave the city. You will progress all the way from one metroplex to the next until you hit the border at San Diego.

While this coast is some of the  most beautiful in the world. CA has a horrible nanny socialist state mentality. Gas here is about 3.88 a gallon. Its one of the highest in the US. I am curious what is gas per litre there?

I envy you Jafo. I have been planning on moving to Wyoming or Central Oregon. Saving the money and doing it are both hard. Congrats to you for moving.

Mad Max would go broke driving the outback at the speeds he did. Sheesh no wonder they laid siege to the refinery!

Why I moved house..... cos it's too bloody hot up there in Queensland.  I love the colder weather of Tassie and feel a lot more comfortable here, without the need for air-con.  If we were still up there the air-con would be running 24/7 and costing us a fortune, so this was/is a great move.

I've been asked several times what I'm going to do when temps plummet to zero and below.  That's easy, I just put on a sweater and some long pants, not that I feel the cold as much as most.  Most of the year down here I wear just shorts and a tee shirt - sometimes no shirt at all.

What's more, I don't suffer with the vertigo as much down here in Tassie.  Up there in Queensland I woke every day with it and had issues with balance and mobility, whereas down here it is far less severe, and some days I don't get it at all.  I still have issues with arthritis and associated pain, but I now have some decent meds and can manage it a lot better than I could before.

Yup, it has been a great move for us all, but especially for me.   I even sleep better at night now I'm here and feeling much happier with my lot.

The house is smaller than what we're accustomed to, but we have adapted and rearranged things to suit.  There's a 2 car garage out back that I'm adapting to become our new study area and computer room, so that will help to compensate for the smaller spaces inside.

Anyhow, 'tis cuppa tea time and I'm outta here.

Same here!  Where I live now [Launceston Tasmania] is more like a big country town than a city.  Same as where we were before [Ipswich Queensland] but a hell of a lot cooler.  I never liked Brisbane, nor Sydney or Melbourne... they're concrete jungles where everything happens full-on and nothing happens at a leisurely pace.
